| UNCW STUDENT KILLED IN DORM SHOULD BRING QUESTIONS ABOUT SAFETY
Victim Jessica Faulkner
Curtis Timothy Dixon
UNCW Chief of Police David Donaldson UNCW student, Jessica Faulkner, of Cary, North Carolina, body was discovered Wednesday a short distance down the hall from her own bed. Another student, Curtis Dixon had apparently forced Jessica Faulkner into his room and killed her. Dixon is charged with Murder, rape, kidnapping and sexual assault.
According to John Faulkner, the victim's father, Curtis Dixon phoned him earlier that morning and confessed to killing his daughter. From a prepared statement, UNCW Police Chief David Donaldson said that within 10 mins of the call reporting the murder his department had Dixon in custody. He did not answer any questions. It is rumored that Dixon turned himself in. A frantic 911 call by Jessi's father, into the county system at 12:38PM, complains that UNCW hasn't moved fast enough to find his daughter. He said he called two times earlier that morning and has not heard anything except that they were looking for the suspect and not his daughter. We will be looking into campus crime in the UNC system and how UNCW compares. We want to know is the campus safe. We are being told it is but this is the second student to die on campus in the past 45 days. UNCW student, Jeff Leigh Irby, was found dead in his on campus apartment the end of March from a heroin overdose. There have been only two other murders, reported on campuses in the entire UNC School System since 2000. UNCW's crime statistics compared to other universities show a high incident of crime, especially violent crimes such as rape and sexual assault. Another question is the relationship Dixon's has with the UNC System and UNCW's standards for admissions. (Curtis Dixon is the son of James Ellis Dixon III, UNC Charlotte's executive assistant to the chancellor and assistant secretary of the Board of Trustees since 1990) The legitimate qualifications for admissions by Curtis Dixon is being looked into. Dixon was not a "typical" student accepted for enrollment by"typical" means. He was a high school dropout, a convicted criminal, did not complete courses he took at UNCC, had discipline trouble at the NC School of the Arts, stayed only one semester and yet this guy ends up at UNCW.
