INMATE'S ATTEMPT TO TAKE FLIGHT IS MORTALLY UNSUCCESFUL In his desperate escape attempt of Polk Youth Center, an inmate jerked loose from prison officials, maybe to insanely demonstrate his ability to fly and scampered up the stairs threatening those in pursuit. As the inmate perhaps hollered "Clear for take off!", 21 year old (DOB 12-10-82) accused murderer Curtis Dixon jumped from the top floor, flapping his "wings" and falling to the concrete below like a rock.Who knows? What we do know is that Dixon may have been kept in Processing Unit C-1, if so the unit is used to house inmates for segregation, lock-up of unruly and violent prisoners and protective custody housing for suicidal or particularly vulnerable inmates who may fall victim to the general inmate population of predatory criminals. All upper-level "Catwalks" have reinforced Plexiglas panels going up to the ceiling to prevent falls, intentional or otherwise. This would make it extremely difficult, almost impossible, for Dixon to leap to his death. Perhaps his fall took place in another building. Dixon later succumbed to his injuries at Duke Hospital. On May 5, 2004, Dixon had confessed to the brutal rape, torture and strangulation death of fellow UNCW student, Jessica Faulkner, who died in his dorm room the day before she was set to leave for summer vacation. He was awaiting a Capital Murder trial in the Butner, NC prison. Why Curtis Dixon was at the Polk Youth Center in Butner is not known at this time. How Dixon ended up a student at UNCW, when he obviously did not have the academic credentials for admission back in 2003, is another maybe more important question for the university to answer. When asked about Dixon's attempted flight, UNCW Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo released the following statement: “My heart goes out to the families and the many people at this university who continue to suffer through this tragic and painful ordeal.” the Chancellor continued by saying, "The last eight months have been a challenge because of the two horrific murders that wounded the campus" This statement may, or may not be in contrast with something once said by Thomas Corey Moorefield 22, a UNCW student and president of the UNCW Surf Club, as well as the UNCW Mascot, who has been recently arrested for dealing drugs and is the poster child for the ever growing drug and alcohol problems on campus, Moorefield said, "who...wha.. wait you mean ... aww man bummer... that sucks I think." We at the Blue Line issue the following statement regarding Curtis Dixon's failed flight, we say "Thank God the sick, murdering, jailbird couldn't fly!" News of Dixon's death OBSERVATION: It took a 25-foot, head-first fall by Dixon, to accomplish the exact the same results, suffered by Gary Rummer, when Rummer supposedly fell only 18 inches onto a foam mat in the New Hanover County Jail.
