DRUG STATISTICAL INFORMATION

According to the Department of Corrections, 301 people in New Hanover County went to prison for drug offenses between August 1, 2004 and July 31, 2004. Of those 301 only 13 or 4% went in for trafficking. When there is such a disparity between those entering prison for possession and those trafficking there is a signal to those digging through statistical information that shows an ineffective campaign against the arrest and conviction of the criminals delivering drugs into the community, the dealers. The high number of users combined with the high levels of property crime shows a definite drug problem in an area. To not have a higher number of convicted traffickers when crime levels signifying high illegal drug use definitely shows a lack of attention to drug dealers.

In New Hanover County this is particularly distressing because the County has a higher number, per capita, of drug agents than anywhere else in the State.

What these statistics show us is that little is being done to catch the bad guys bringing in the large quantity of illegal drugs into our area. Seldom do we see an arrest of the amount of drugs seized as we see in other counties. Recently a woman from Wilmington was arrested in Wake County for a kilo of cocaine that she was delivering.

Statistics do not lie but someone is lying when they say that they are on the job to protect us from the drug epidemic killing our citizens and destroying the security of our communities.
