Sheriff
Sid Causey paid
a man $1,000 for locating a "big flag" for him just
before the July 4th celebrations. In a grandstanding news conference
Causey displayed the flag he seized from a porch in Carolina Beach.

The
flag, owned by Walter
Harris, was found two years ago behind his store, Honey Baked
Ham on College Road.
The
flag was suspected by Causey of being the flag stolen from Veterans
Park back in May. Even though the flag seized was not
the same size as the flag that was missing from Veterans Park,
and park officials had stated with assurance that "it ain't
the same flag" Mr. Harris' flag was held as evidence by the
Sheriff for nearly 30 days. No reason given except that the issue
was still under investigation.
"Sheriff
Sid Causey said Wednesday, the ex-Marine who spotted the flag
and notified authorities will keep the $1,000 reward already paid
out to him." Star News July 6, 2006
Causey
himself returned the flag without apology to Harris this week
and urged Harris to burn the flag because Causey believed it to
be a disgrace to display a flag that was not in perfect condition.
This is in direct conflict with the way the Sheriff respected
and cared for his own flag at the old LEC.
