Maria Lauterbach was murdered

It would have been extremely helpful for the Marines to have notified the Onslow County Sheriff's Office of the rape allegations and MPO against Cpl Cesar Laurean. Had that information been shared then perhaps Cpl. Laurean's temporary escape from justice would have been prevented.

The search warrant shows an extreme lack of action in regards to securing the suspect , Cpl. Cesar Laurean in the disappearance of Lance Corporal Maria Francis Lauterbach.

"He (Sgt Durham) was concerned and did go to his command to report her as missing. The command confirmed Mr. Durham's statements, but also stated that little was done on on the military side and no official missing (person) report was filed.

According to Mr. Durham Warrant Officer Wright of the USMC was notified of Ms. Lauterbach's missing status. ATTEMPTS WERE MADE MULTIPLE TIMES by Det. J. Moore to contact Warrant Officer Wright, thus far (January 7, 2008) with no results. " Narrative on Search Warrant regarding OCA:2007026892

Tuesday the military tossed the blame ball right back intot he sheriff's court. Read the full statement here.

District Attorney Dewey Hudson and Sheriff Ed Brown made an announcement that !st Degree Murder charges have been filed against Cesar Laurean for the murder of eight and a half month pregnant Maria Lauterbach a 20 year old Marine from Ohio. Lauterbach had earlier filed rape charges against Laurean in April of 2007. A military protective order (MPO) was taken out by Lauterbach against Laurean in August. Sheriff Brown in recalling the crime scene said it was the most disturbing of his career. The image of the fetus's hand that had been burned and detached away from it's arm he says will always be a sad imprint into his memory. DA Hudson said that if there is evidence that the baby survived his mother then it may be possible to bring charges for the murder of Maria Lauterbach's son.

Other notes from the press conference:

The note left behind by Laurean was not a suicide note

There is no evidence that the baby was cut away from his mother

The DA said this murder meets the criteria for a Capital Offence

A bank card belonging to Maria was recovered today in an unidentified place in North Carolina

The Sheriff first learned of the MPO today.

In the worst possible scenario, missing Marine Maria Lauterbach is dead. It also appears that her unborn child is also dead. Early this morning Sgt. Dan Durham was brought in from his training in California to talk about his roommate and good friend Maria. He had been suspected of aiding and assisting Maria 's escape from the media and those searching for her somehow because of a suspicious act. Durham has been and continued to be fully cooperative with authorities and was devastated by the news of his friend's death.

As I watched the angry and bitter stepmother, Mary Lauterbach, once again describe her lost stepdaughter as mentally ill on Good Morning America this morning, I couldn't help but think that those harsh words would someday come back to haunt her. Too many people were quick to judge a young woman newly released into the world, quickly gobbled up into the regimented routine of military life and no sooner than you can say "Bob's your uncle" Maria is raped and pregnant. Foot dragging investigation into this rape, the accused walking about freely, threatening her with his Good Conduct Medal firmly pinned to his uniform, Cesar Laurean terrorized and ultimately killed the good soldier Maria Lauterbach.

Christina Laurean, wife of hunted murderer Cesar Laurean more than likely is the one that tipped off the Sheriff about the murder and the location of Maria and that of her unborn son's remains, the backyard. When the Sheriff said that the reason he brought back Sgt. Durham was because Sgt. Durham was the closet person to Maria, the sheriff said that is the kid of relationship the witness had with the suspected killer Laurean. It isn't hard to figure out who that witness is especially since the NCIS Special Agent Ciccarelli said the witness was a woman. So what evidence is there that is so compelling that would allow the ever cautious sheriff to tell the world that Maria Lauterbach is dead? How about a handwritten note left behind apologizing to the wife. The wife finds it when she wakes up, and calls authorities. I'll take bets on whether or not I'm correct in my assumptions with anyone who dares.

I do want to know if I am correct because I owe, whoever called in the tip, one hundred dollars that I pledged to Sheriff Brown when he offered up his own $500 reward for information leading to the discovery of the whereabouts of the lovely and promising mom to be, Maria Frances Lauterbach, a 20 year old who will be welcomed home back in Ohio to tears and sorrow by the many friends and family who await her and her innocent son's bodies. May God keep us all safe.

Lauterbach's uncle, Peter Steiner, a psychiatrist who lives in Louisville, Ky., and had been in Jacksonville in the past week looking into his niece's disappearance, said his niece called her uncle's home at least twice a week, because they were very close.

"She was a very beautiful, athletic young lady. She volunteered to join the Marine Corps. She was very committed to the Marines, and she is being portrayed in a way that does not look well. She was petrified; she has been continually intimidated and harassed by people (Marines). She was not protected; she was not well looked after." Jacksonville Daily News

In what looks to be a John Gresham whodunit because of a "witness" that disappears just prior to testifying in a mysterious criminal case may just turn out to be nothing more than the story of a confused and scared young woman that loves her newly born baby infant more than her own life. So perhaps Maria is just in hiding while she cares for her child and decides what her future holds for them both. Who cares if Nancy Grace or whoever fans the flames of foul play when your life is upside down and you long for silence, away from criticism and friendly advice? What this young mother just might need is simply a open ended leave of absence.

Lance Corporal Marie Lauterbach has now been missing for three weeks. Her mother Mary waits at home in Ohio for the phone to ring, A ring she has been familiar with since her daughter left home when she joined the Marines 2 years ago and moved to Camp Lejeune, NC. A familiar ring that came more than once a day up until December 14. Then the waiting began.

It was 5 days later on December 19th when Mary Lauterbach contacted the Onslow County Sheriff's Office to report her 20 year old daughter missing. There has been no phone call, no contact whatsoever. The family begins to wait for a word, anyword assuring them that Maria is alive and well. This is the same family that endured the same sort of waiting back in 1979 when Maria's uncle was held hostage in Iran.

Maria's friend called the mom and said she appears to have disappeared. A big withdrawal from her bank account the day she went missing, another suspicious activity on her bank account just before Christmas, no activity on her cell phone and then finally the discovery of her abandoned car behind the bus station on Monday. Tuesday was the press conference, the first bit of information, by Friday we will have a picture of the suspected baby's daddy on every TV screen in America and Nancy Grace will be calling for his head.

At the press conference Tuesday the sheriff said he was troubled about the welfare of Maria. Now when Sheriff Ed Brown becomes concerned, something is definately wrong. His carefully worded trail of bread crumbs leads us right back into this John Gresham novel. What happened? Where is this baby's daddy? And what's all this talk of "others" and about the roommate as a person of interest?

I don't know but if this Gresham's novel is of a military cover-up regarding allegations of rape, sorted seamy tales of adultery and a villain of higher rank in a heated climate of women in the private contracting services and military recently being raped overseas is troubling for our recruitment efforts to secure the service and commitment of talented women such as Maria. The deep, dark , dirty secret may just be that crimes are being comitted, women are being raped, on military bases, right here in the US and nothing is being done about it ... perhaps until now, when someone's selfish desire for self preservation far and away outweighs their sensibilities and the lights get cut on exposing warts and all.

Carl Jung said we must face our shadows and deal with it. God says we must shine a light into the darkness. Maybe Maria is doing a little of both by not being found just now.

Was Maria in law enforcement? In a photo shown on Good Morning America, Maria Lauterbach seems to be dressed in some type of police uniform.
