UNCW MASCOT ARRESTED

Neighborhood acts on drug dealer and WPD responds

Recently we heard about a woman tired of drug activity and shootings at or near her home at 8th and Orange Street. She complains that no one is doing anything to protect her so she went to a private security firm and paid to get them to help patrol her home. This seems to be a waste of money for the homeowner and a potential legal nightmare if the security guards tangle with the wrong people or get into the way of police action. Police work is best left to law enforcement officers.

A good example of how to handle situations that cause alarm in your neighborhood would be how the neighbors all got together in the Hidden Forest subdivision off of Oleander Drive. When they noticed a large number of cars making quick stop and goes from the 505 Calley Court residence, they alerted a neighbor, David Hursey, a Wilmington Police Officer. Hursey said, “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to imagine what is going on in that house.”

Thomas Corey Moorefield 22, a UNCW student and president of the UNCW Surf Club, as well as the UNCW Mascot, was arrested for possession with intent to distribute, scales, maintaining a residence for the sale of drugs and valium. Moorefield also has an earlier arrest with a court date strangely enough of 8/30/05 for possession and drug paraphernalia. (we guess that Moorefield plans on graduating this summer that is why the court date is pushed to the end of the summer) Cathy Conners, of Cary, NC, owns several houses in the neighborhood and rents them to college students. Numerous complaints have been called into her and she has failed to act, it took the neighbors concern to let the Wilmington Police know of the potential dangers in their community.

When asked about the drug problem at UNCW there was a quick denial of an existing drug problem on campus, yet last summer James Irby, the popular head of the Sailing Club died of a lethal heroin overdose. The autopsy report indicated that Irby was a well know heroin user and had many times tried to kick the habit. It also stated that Irby’s body was found in the bathroom of his campus apartment with a needle sticking out of his arm. When asked today what the university plans on doing about this student, whether or not he will be able to remain a student at UNCW, the call to UNCW was directed to Captain Willis of the UNCW Police department. Captain Willis said that it all depends on the dean’s perception of how serious of a crime it was on whether or not any disciplinary action will take place.

Since then we have seen the arrests of two individuals dealing cocaine and other drugs out of their dorm room, there was a report of a UNCW student arrested for 15 pounds of pot in Sampson County. National news came about as the result of the arrest of a tennis star, 21-year-old Danilo Mendes is off the team and no longer a student at the college, he was arrested for selling 250 doses of the powerful drug ecstasy. Drugs, guns and cash were seized in bust at Lansdowne. The group of folk arrested at that house were supposedly profitable enough selling to college kids, that they bought several expensive cars and other toys from their proceeds.

UNCW is certainly not the only university with a drug problem. But they are one of the few not yet willing to admit it. This is an education facility, professionals that know how to train and educate our young adults on how to better prepare for the future. Maybe more of a focus needs to be directed on educating safe behavior to some of these ill informed students and less on athletics and social entertainment events.

Evidence of the misdirection of concern can be found in the public outrage that student athletes caught hazing incoming freshmen were suspended from the team. You would have thought that a no tolerance policy for hazing would be easy enough to understand. But the parents and Athletic Director did not see it that way and stomped their feet to protect this tradition of humiliation and sexual harassment resulting in the replacement of the Athletic Director Doppes.
Basketball players suspended with no public explanation and now this the latest embarrassment to hit the National press, UNCW MASCOT ARRESTED FOR DEALING DRUGS! Thanks Mr. Moorefield!

Moorefield was released on a $5,000 bond
